Student Voice Mail...

Each residence hall student has an individual voice mailbox. Incoming calls that you do not answer and calls that are received while you are on the phone will be forwarded to the University voice mail system.

The first mailbox to which calls are forwarded is the room mailbox. A message recorded by Telephone Services will say, "You have reached 785-____. For student A, press 1, for student B, press 2." After the caller presses 1 or 2 on a touch-tone phone, the call will be forwarded to the appropriate student mailbox where the student's greeting will play and the caller may leave a message.

The easiest way to reach your mailbox is to:

  1. Call your own line from your phone. (Since you are on the line, you will be forwarded directly to the room mailbox.)

  2. Listen to the recorded menu and choose your mailbox by pressing the number corresponding to your name.

  3. Wait for your greeting to start and then press the (*) key. You will then be asked for your pass code.

  4. Type in your four digit pass code. (All pass codes are set at 1234 originally; if you forget yours, contact Telephone Services and they can reset it.)

  5. Follow the recorded voice instructions to set up your mailbox or retrieve messages.

  6. Press 9 to exit the system.

The voice mail system answers more than one half million calls each month.

If you do not wish to use the voice mail system, you may purchase your own answering machine. If you choose to do this, you must call Telephone Services and request that the voice mail system postpone pickup until the sixth ring so that your answering machine may answer first. You may want to occasionally check your voice mail anyway because some faculty and organizations may leave messages for groups of students on the voice mail system concerning meeting times, etc. Emergency announcements for storm warnings, etc., will be posted on the voice mail system.
